When the Middle East conflict broke out earlier this year, ASEAN was widely viewed as one of the most affected regions. Many of the regional economies are not only hugely dependent on energy imports from the Middle East, but also sensitive to swings in global commodity prices. Inflation has surged in the Philippines and Vietnam, while Indonesia and Thailand have increased subsidies to help cushion the impact of higher oil prices.
